Vanguard announced that multiple U.S. equity index funds will have "Morningstar" added to their names, effective July 29, 2026. This change follows Morningstar's acquisition of CRSP in February 2026, which includes the indexes tracked by these Vanguard funds.
Beginning on July 29, 2026, "Morningstar" will be added to the names of multiple Vanguard equity index funds. For example:
- Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund will become Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market Index Fund
- Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) will become Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF (VTI)
- Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF (VO) will become Vanguard Morningstar Mid-Cap ETF (VO)
This naming convention aligns with how Vanguard identifies funds that track indexes from other providers, ensuring clarity and consistency for investors.
Benchmark Names
The underlying benchmarks are being rebranded from CRSP to Morningstar. For example:
- CRSP US Total Market Index becomes Morningstar US Total Market Index
- CRSP US Mid Cap Index becomes Morningstar US Mid Cap Index
- CRSP US Small Cap Growth Index becomes Morningstar US Small Cap Growth Index
What's NOT Changing
This is purely a name change. There are no changes to:
- Investment objectives, strategies, or policies
- Index construction methodology – The way the indexes are built remains identical
- Rebalancing frequency
- Securities included in the indexes
- Fund tickers (e.g., VTI, VO, VB)
- CUSIPs
- Expense ratios
